The dual drum tracks (with slight differences) give this a very urgent feeling, and the electronic beeping noise hints that the system might be shutting down somewhere. Something intense is happening in “Drunk Slide.” And the whimsical vibraphone isn’t helping the feeling. –and immediately after the last note of “Pariah” comes a cinematic, low, and intrusive piano riff, sinking the listener into a fight-or-flight haze. The song ends with the same riff it began with, but this time it has more layers to it, with more harmonic elegance– Oh delusions never really qualify, qualified as an excuse.” This is a truth, but what are the delusions? The hypothesis of the album is that religion or unquestioned structures of life are the delusion, and without these we might have “No more fighting…No more pain…No more chaos…No more greed…” Musically, this track is one that seems like it should be a little bit longer–maybe one more chorus in there would satisfy more. So begins the album with “Pariah.” After some heavy rhythm riffs and a strained-sounding verse, Gavin Hayes bursts forth in a smooth and pleading chorus, singing, “Oh delusions aren’t meant to justify, justify the things you do. And the letter has a message.ĭat dah doo doo dah dah dah. The CD and LP releases are packed and designed to resemble a letter (hence the “Stamps”). The album has a good share of instrumentals, too, one thing that the previous album, Catch Without Arms, lacked (with the exception of “The Ornament” at the end of the album).

There are what are called “Stamps of Origin,” which act as transitions between groups of songs. The album is structured in a way similar to dredg’s second full-length album, El Cielo, was structured. The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion is a hefty rock journey through a multifaceted concept: What if the seven billionth person born could be special in a very significant way?

But take heart: this is yet another musical Daliesque masterpiece. My heart is still a little sunken when I think of this album, but only based on my expectations of the trajectory that dredg seemed to be taking before the album was released (and previously leaked). We’ve already got a thousand rock bands vocally disapproving of the government and organized religion. Not another band sinking into the humdrum abyss of politics and satire. (Warning: This is an analysis, and it’s lengthy.) When I first heard the title of dredg‘s new album, my heart sank.
